Adoption documents prepared for notarization and authentication

Adoption Paperwork: What Needs Notarizing and Authenticating

October 06, 2026•2 min read

Few processes carry as much paperwork — or as much emotion — as adoption. Several documents along the way require a notary, and for international adoptions, an apostille on top of that. Knowing which is which keeps a heavy process from getting heavier.

Documents that often need a notary

  • Consent and acknowledgment forms
  • Affidavits and sworn statements required by the court or agency
  • Home-study and financial statements, where notarization is requested
  • Powers of attorney related to the adoption

What the notary does — and doesn’t

The notary verifies the identity of each signer and witnesses the signature. The notary does not prepare the adoption documents, give legal advice, or determine whether your paperwork satisfies the court, agency, or a foreign authority — that’s for your attorney and agency.

International adoption: the extra step

Documents headed to another country usually need to be notarized first, then apostilled (for Hague Convention countries) so the receiving country recognizes them. The order matters, and requirements vary by country, so confirm exactly what’s needed before you start.

Handled with patience and in your language

I notarize adoption documents remotely, in English and Chinese, with the care this process deserves — and I’ll explain the notarize-then-apostille sequence for documents used abroad. Always work with your adoption attorney and agency on the legal requirements.

This article is general educational information about the notarization process, not legal advice. A notary public verifies identity and witnesses signatures and is not a substitute for an attorney. Remote online notarization is regulated state by state; please confirm the current requirements for your specific situation and the destination where your document will be used. I perform remote online notarizations only in the state(s) where I am commissioned and authorized (Nevada and Montana).
