A Financial Power of Attorney for Parents in China
Managing a parent’s affairs across the Pacific is one of the most common — and most stressful — situations for our community. Whether your parents in China need to authorize you to act here, or you need to act on their behalf there, a power of attorney is usually the key document, and it almost always needs notarization.
Two directions, same tool
- Parents authorizing you in the U.S.: a POA signed and notarized so you can handle a U.S. matter for them.
- You authorizing action in China: a POA notarized here, then apostilled, so it’s recognized by authorities in China.
Why the apostille step comes up
For a U.S.-signed POA to be used in China, it’s typically notarized first and then apostilled — and since November 2023, the apostille generally replaces the older consular-legalization process. The notary verifies identity and witnesses the signature; the apostille authenticates the notary’s seal for use abroad.
Where remote and bilingual really help
Elderly parents may be the ones signing, and they’re often most comfortable in Chinese. A patient remote session lets a parent sign from home — here or abroad — while family joins from anywhere. An attorney should prepare the POA to fit the specific powers needed, and always confirm with the receiving institution in China what they require before you sign.

This article is general educational information about the notarization process, not legal advice. A notary public verifies identity and witnesses signatures and is not a substitute for an attorney. Remote online notarization is regulated state by state; please confirm the current requirements for your specific situation and the destination where your document will be used. I perform remote online notarizations only in the state(s) where I am commissioned and authorized (Nevada and Montana).
