Passport and affidavit of support prepared for notarization

Affidavits of Support and Sponsorship Letters: Getting Them Right

July 14, 20262 min read

For immigration matters, an affidavit of support or a sponsorship letter is often where a small formatting mistake causes a big delay. These documents are sworn statements, and getting the notarization right is part of getting them accepted.

What the notary’s role is

The notary confirms the identity of the person making the statement and witnesses their signature, often administering an oath that the contents are true to the best of their knowledge. The notary does not decide whether your affidavit meets USCIS or consular requirements — that is for you and, where needed, your attorney.

Common mistakes that cause rejection

  • Signing the document before the appointment — the notary must witness the signature
  • Names that don’t match the signer’s ID exactly
  • Missing pages or an incomplete date
  • Using a notarization format the receiving authority doesn’t accept

Why this is a strong fit for remote, bilingual service

Sponsors and applicants are often in different cities or countries, and the language of a sworn statement matters. A remote online session lets the signer appear from anywhere with a valid ID, and I can explain each line in Chinese so nothing is signed that the signer doesn’t fully understand. Always confirm the current requirements with the receiving agency or your attorney before signing.

This article is general educational information about the notarization process, not legal advice. A notary public verifies identity and witnesses signatures and is not a substitute for an attorney. Remote online notarization is regulated state by state; please confirm the current requirements for your specific situation and the destination where your document will be used. I perform remote online notarizations only in the state(s) where I am commissioned and authorized (Nevada and Montana).
